A short day in Bangalore

India has always been a favourite destination of mine. The people, the place, the food, the history... the whole subcontinent is soaking with culture. And recently, I had the good fortune of spending 36 hours in Bangalore, the Silicone Valley of India.

Bangalore is the state capital of Karnataka. Located on the Deccan Plateau some 3000ft above sea level, it enjoys wholesome mountain weather most of the year. As my stay was short, I had to give utmost priority to two must-do's of mine: 1) Stock up on Hindi movie DVDs and, 2) Eat!

But of course, along the way, picture-taking is customary. Firstly, I headed for Brigade Road, for my DVDs. This relatively short street is the local Jalan Bukit Bintang or Orchard Road. While snapping away, I inadvertently caught this beauty in my viewfinder. She is most likely from the north-east of India. How fortuitous.

A scene from the middle of the busy Brigade Road. And this is the junction of Brigade Road and FM Cariappa Road. The hustle and bustle of FM Cariappa Road.
The streets are peppered with Bel Poori stalls like this:Bel Poori is healthy stuff. It's made up of puffed rice, a little potato, plenty of coriander, raw onion, a little chili, tamarind and, possibly, date juice, and what seem like crispbread made from chickpea flour.

However, my gastronomical attention was elsewhere. Specifically, here:
I first dined at Nadhini about three years ago, on my very first trip here. It is basically banana-leaf rice. But having it here on the Indian continent, I must say, the authenticity of the meal scores highly. Psychologically or otherwise.

Now you see it.....
.....now you don't! And nothing like a cup of Masala Chai to end it.
Strolling back to the hotel I came across this enterprising little 'un manning his dad's Bel Poori stall next to some Army quarters. He saw me with my camera and immediately waved me over, "Uncle, uncle. Please take picture."
A little further down the road I encountered street kids.
The instant I took this shot, they all surrounded me, asking for a few rupees each. Heart-wrenching. Looking around to make sure there aren't any bigger groups of kids, I handed over a couple of notes. Walking on, I couldn't help but think about Nurin and our children in Malaysia. Are our kids really luckier to have been born in Malaysia as opposed to these children here in India? The arguments go both ways. My philosophical pondering was then abruptly halted by this sight:

I stood there laughing with my camera clicking.

As for the children in your post, I think they live safer than ours.

you certainly have a good eye for the babes. more! (jangan lupa bawak kamera hari ahad ni)

was anybody upset that you folded the banana leaf away from you? that's the sign for 'i didn't like the food and i aint coming back', you know?

I read so much about Bangalore in 'The World Is Flat'. Is our Cyberjaya anything close to it?
I love poori, must try Bel poori one day.

Ah I was just about to comment on the folding of banana leaf. I always get confused but I *do* believe that if you love the food, you're to fold it towards you (although you might risk getting the leftover curry cravy spill on your lap heh). Unless you're at a funeral, then you'd need to fold it the way you fold it heh.

HAHAHA. The then Da Vinci Code is hilarious!

yope..a friend of mine, had to be posted to India for a year, and he can only survived for 2 weeks..the rest, meraung nak balik..

alamak, surprised you can handle the indian food and wussup with the hindi movies yope oii, tsk tsk..

shionge..... you should give India a long look. You can start in Bangalore where it's cool and relatively cleaner than, say, Mumbai.

east43st..... Iraqi chai is spicy and super-koww, tak leh tidur nya grade. In many ways, yes, it is safer for kids to roam around in Indian streets still.

lily..... I inadvertantly caught her in my viewfinder. But the click was deliberate...

Da Winged Acrophobic said...

jules..... babes are everywhere. The trick is to appear innocently taking pictures of the scenery. Ahad is on!

des & leen..... I used to have this hangup about folding in so as to follow the established practice. But over there, in Nandhini at least, the locals fold in OR out. I asked a waiter for guidance and he said, "Fold in gravy spill." Needs further clarification, this. BTW, in KL I fold in.

DNAS..... Bangalore loses out in terms of cleanliness and aesthetics. But it has more energy and character. And it has Bel Poori.

Da Winged Acrophobic said...

akula..... that's one heckuva graffiti, agree. After that, I was laughing myself all 15 minutes back to the hotel.

kuzz oh kuzz.....Tum kesai ho?India memang camtu, love it or hate it. For me, it's love, pyar hai. Been watching Hindi movies since 5 years old when heroines where 'substantial'. Now that they are svelte, lagi syok tengok.

Cik Puan Sri Quzz said...

ahh yope. abih yang 'substantial' cam myself ni, thank God tak penah dream jadi heroine hindi movie kan..nak svelte kononnya, lambat lagi. ahh man..

Da Winged Acrophobic said...

kuzz oh kuzz..... I tengok gambor-gambor uols semuanye svelte jer. Jangan ler nak kuruih sampai jadi 'unfed' lak.

Aahhh nice pictures. You have a good eye my brader :)

Would love to visit India some day. Heard indian food is really really cheap! Is it hygenic to eat at the restaurants there?

the last picture must be the reason why i have yet to read the da vinci code.

and on the daun pisang, i once was scolded by my yeen-deee-yen friend for folding the leaf outward. yeedeeeot i tell you. so from that day onwards, i fold my daun pisang inward. at least i enjoy the papadom.

this thing on Ahad, ada any single handsome guys tak? *hiks*

sexy turtle.....happy that you like my pictures. Only my equipment is professional, I'm still an amateur photographer.

dade G..... thanks for your prayer, bro. India is safe. I'd say it's safer there than in JB. I walk around with cameras never feeling nervous. Arms, you'd probably get it easier in KL.

cosmic gurl..... Thankyou, thankyou. India is still relatively cheap but prices are creeping upwards by the day. Rule of thumb in India to avoid the 'Bombay Belly': Don't eat anything that is not cooked.

Da Winged Acrophobic said...

babe..... I haven't read the novel, too. I haven't seen the movie in its entirety as well. I suppose the hype was a turn-off. The banana-leaf etiquette still perplexes. I turned it outward only at Nandhini's on this ocassion because of the waiter's comment.

mz_ayam.... chalo mumbai hai! I can be your guide there. We'll dine at Khyber Pass where the leg of lamb is heavenly.

lily..... you'd better check with jules on that, he's the organizer.

Just stopping by to say hello. I got your return email a few minutes ago, I'm doing better in blogworld, and I will add your page when I get home again later. For now, I'm off to meet a friend for lunch at an Indian restaurant.
It was already planned the other day, so when I found my way to your page again today it was like synchronicity, reading about India.
Have a great day! Thanks for responding.
p.s. I love Chai altho your authentic version must be soooo much better!

drama mama..... bohot acha hai! I'm flabbergasted. Well, my latest watch is 'Banares', an offbeat indie Hindi that has Naseerudin Shah in it.

crystalchick..... thanks for dropping by. Hope your meal was as great as Indian meals always are! The authentic chai is extremely great and more importantly, cheap.

trueblue..... memang best the food there. I'm salivating just thinking about it.

Tori din pehle, main "Rang de Basanti" dekhiya. Kya aap Bollywood movies se Hindi zaban seekhna? ;)

Naseerudin Shah is a good actor. He was in "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" as well, wasn't he? Played Captain Nemo or summat.

Hello there, mate,

Adaab,

Hmmmm...love (garam: hot) masala chai....the last one i had was last sept at bharat tea plantation sandwich shop. Whats more, i was drinking it while breathing the fresh, tantalizing if not, intoxicating smell of tea plantation itself. And it's one of my aphrodisiac besides chocolates.

I could actually imagine tasting it with my eyes close....drools...

Da Winged Acrophobic said...

manal..... hi, that must be the bharat tea stop that overlooks a valley. Sipping masala tea there is priceless. But I must admit it's my first time coming across someone who get's turned on by chai. You lucky girl!
